This position serves as the subject matter expert for substation design, construction, and operation. Leads technical standards, mentors team members, and oversees internal and external project execution to ensure reliable, modern, and compliant power delivery systems.

Principal Substation Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Lead expert for all substation technical aspects, compliance, and standards
  • Oversee and direct substation design projects, including contractor-managed work
  • Maintain and update company substation standards
  • Conduct cross-disciplinary design reviews for alignment and quality
  • Provide mentorship and support to engineering staff
  • Integrate modern technologies, including renewable energy and grid modernization
  • Represent substation engineering in interdepartmental and compliance discussions
  • Contribute to long-term planning and cost estimation for projects
  • Engage with industry organizations (e.g., EPRI, NATF) to stay current and drive innovation
  • Perform additional duties to support company goals

Principal Substation Engineer Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering required (Electrical or Power Systems preferred)
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • PE license in Indiana and Illinois preferred
  • 10+ years with a graduate degree in a relevant field
  • 15+ years with a bachelor’s degree
  • Other experience levels may be considered
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and leadership skills
  • Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD, WinIGS, Inventor, and substation design tools
  • Deep understanding of substation systems and industry regulations (NERC, RUS, IEEE)
  • Experience developing and maintaining engineering standards
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and lead innovation initiatives
