Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots can be a job seeker’s best friend. You can ask them to find job openings in your area or other cities or states that are a good fit for you. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. AI chatbots can also be your personal career muse. Simply ask the chatbot to suggest career paths for you that are based on your interests, key skills, experience, and what you want most in your professional life.  

Here’s an example. We asked ChatGPT to list the three highest-paying careers for someone with five years of pharmaceutical sales experience – but jobs that don’t involve sales. Here’s what ChatGPT said:  

• Medical Science Liaison (MSL): Average Salary – $140,000–$180,000+ 
• Pharmaceutical Product Manager / Marketing Manager: Average Salary: $120,000 -$160,000+ 
• Market Access / Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) Manager: Average Salary – $130,000–$170,000+  

For someone unfamiliar with one or more of those roles, this AI chatbot query could open up a whole new career horizon.  

There are many other ways an AI chatbot can assist in your job search. Here are a few examples:  

• Are you looking for the top companies in a specific industry or vertical market? Check. 

• Do you want help crafting your resume or cover letter for a specific job title or job description? Check. 

• How about interacting with you in a human-like conversation to help you practice for a real-life job interview? You bet!  

Which AI chatbot should you use?

ChatGPT, the original AI chatbot, is practically a household word but there are many others to explore, like Claude from Anthropic, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini (formerly called Bard), and Perplexity, just to name a few.  

Find one that looks and feels comfortable to you and give these job search boosts a whirl!  

Use AI to discover your job and career options   

Put some thought into what you enjoy most or really want in an ideal job. Do you want a job where you can use your creative skills and talents? Analytical skills? Flexibility to establish your own work schedule? Earn over a certain amount in compensation? Work independently or collaborate with a team? Whatever your wants and desires may be, jot them down and use them in your prompt with an AI chatbot.  

Let’s say your personality is more on the introverted side and you prefer to work independently without constant oversight or a lot presenting and interacting with groups. As mentioned above, ask ChatGPT or your chosen chatbot to give you a selection of job ideas that align with your preferences.  

Your question, or prompt, to ChatGPT could be worded this way:  

“What type of jobs could I get that include all of the following?”    

• Ability to be creative  
• Work from home  
• Earnings of over $100,000  
• Have minimal interaction with others
• Calls for a background in writing, computer design, or search engine optimization (SEO)  

With that type of prompt, your chosen AI chatbot might respond with these types of jobs:  

• UX/UI Designer 

• Technical Writer 

• Conversion Copywriter 

• SEO Content Strategist 

• Illustrator 

• Web Designer  

This is a beautiful thing about using an AI chatbot to assist in your career planning and job search. You’ll likely see options that you wouldn’t otherwise have known about or considered on your own. And if you want to see more, just ask for more!  

After your initial prompt, it’s fun to keep the conversation going with your chatbot. For jobs that are most appealing to you, ask for more information, such as a sample job description, average salaries in your specific region or state, top companies that hire for these positions – and for future job security, ask for projected job growth statistics over the next five to 10 years.  

Use AI to find jobs openings near you – or in other choice locations    

You can use your AI chatbot to help you find job openings in your city or in any city, state, or region. AI platforms like ChatGPT instantly pull together open jobs data from a variety of job boards, employment sites, and company websites, and present results to you that are relevant to your specific request.  

Here’s an example job search prompt with specific information about open jobs in your area:  

“Find open jobs near [insert your desired city or state] for a Hotel General Manager with a large chain, upscale brand and amenities, and $140,000+ salary and bonuses.”

Use AI to create an introduction for you   

When you find a job opening that you’re interested in pursuing, you can use the content of that job posting or job description to prepare an impactful message to the hiring manager, the company’s HR department, or other individual in charge of filling the position.  

Here’s a sample prompt for your AI chatbot to assist you in preparing your introductory message:  

“I want to pursue the following job opening. Create a brief description of why I’m a great fit for the job and company, and the reasons I’m interested. Can you also point me in the right direction of the hiring manager?” Then copy and paste the job posting or job description into your prompt. Your chatbot will return good content, and you can fine-tune it on your own or with additional prompts until you arrive at your final round.  

Here’s a great way to find and approach the right contacts at a hiring company:  

1. Have your brief introductory message finalized and ready. 
2. Go to LinkedIn. In the search bar at the top of the page, search for the potential employer’s business page and click it from the drop-down menu. 
3. Once you’re on the company’s business page, click the ‘People’ tab in their navigation bar. This will bring up the list of employees at the company who have accounts on LinkedIn. 
4. Search those employees for people who are applicable to the job opening you’re interested in, and specifically those who hold an HR or senior-level position. 
5. Click the ‘Connect’ button for the people you identified in step 4. In your request to connect, you’ll have the option to enter your own custom message. Copy and paste the brief introduction that your AI chatbot assisted you in preparing and then send your message.  

Use AI to rehearse for job interview questions  

If you’re familiar with AI chatbots and other AI applications, you’ll often see the phrase “generative AI” for these applications. This essentially means that, even though they are automated programs, they can interact with you, be conversational, and “generate” human-like responses to you in natural language.  

AI chatbots can help you practice for interviews by providing real-world interview questions and can even give you constructive feedback on your answers to strengthen your interview prep!  

Let’s say you’ve been invited to a job interview and want to be as prepared as possible. Again, your AI chatbot can be your best friend. Here’s what you can do:  

Give ChatGPT a prompt like this:  

“I’m interviewing for a Marketing Director job at a healthcare company. Ask me some important questions that I may have to answer during my interview.”    

You will quickly receive a list of valid questions that range from leadership to regulatory awareness, digital and data-driven strategies, your collaboration style, and much more. Not only can you think about and respond with your answers, but you can also ask ChatGPT to rate your responses and even simulate a full mock interview with you.  

Keep going back and forth with your AI chatbot until you feel confident in your answers and interview readiness. And once your real interview is completed, ask AI to help you craft a thank-you letter to the person who conducted the interview.
