Having been in the talent recruiting and hiring space for several years, I’ve observed a thing or two about how job candidates perform during job interviews – both the good and the bad. I’ve had the unique opportunity as well to speak with countless hiring managers about their experiences in interviewing candidates. They see the good and the bad, too, and they have some valuable advice for job seekers.  

Without further ado, I’m presenting our collective advice and guidance. This article dives into important tips to help you ace your next video interview, leave a lasting first impression, and increase your odds of landing the job.  

Research the hiring company  

You want to be taken seriously, so be informed. Prepare for your interview by checking out the company’s website, their history, location(s), and products and services. Many companies state their mission and values on their websites, and these are key to understanding their role and purpose in the market, who they serve, and how they operate. You might also visit the company’s LinkedIn page to learn about their recent activities. And if possible, visit their location. Your goal is to have a solid understanding of what they’re all about, so the more you know about the organization, the better prepared you’ll be to express your enthusiasm and true interest in joining their team.  

Test your technology and the platform link 

Make sure everything is working – your device’s microphone and camera, a strong internet connection, and a smooth connection to the virtual platform. I highly recommend logging in to the link provided for the video call well in advance of your interview time. This will ensure the link is working without technical difficulties, but most important, it will give you time to click the necessary links to join, grant permissions to use your mic and camera, and check in with your name to join the call. Taking these steps in advance will eliminate the possibility of being late to your interview, which you want to avoid at all costs! 

Check your lighting and surroundings  

It’s important to test your video setup prior to your interview so that you can be sure the light source in the room is good enough for the interviewer to clearly see you, and that the area behind you is neat and tidy. Natural light is best if you can set things up to where you’re facing a window. A desk lamp can also work, and a ring light behind your device’s camera lens is great if natural light isn’t possible. It’s also important to do video interviews in a quiet place. Dress professionally  

Come to the video interview dressed as if it were an in-person interview. Dress to impress!  

Show confidence  

Hiring managers and talent recruiters know that the job interview process can be unsettling for anyone. Video interviews may be less nerve racking than in-person interviews, but you’re still face-to-face and the pressure is still on. If you get the jitters, just remember this: You were invited to the interview because you’re qualified for the job – so believe in yourself, your skills, your experience, and your hard-earned qualifications. Speak clearly, make eye contact with the interviewer by looking at your camera lens, maintain good posture, smile, and try not to fidget (body language speaks loudly). Your confidence will help to show your interest in and excitement for the role. You’ve got this!  

Be ready for tough questions  

In addition to common interview questions, hiring managers often ask questions that candidates may not be prepared to answer on the spot. Don’t be caught off guard. Check out these keys to answering tough interview questions. For example, if you’ve had short tenures or employment gaps in your work history, you may be asked to explain them. Or, a hiring manager may peel back layers in your skill set and ask specific technical questions. If handled succinctly and professionally, your answers to such questions are an opportunity to show honesty and integrity – traits that are important and desirable to hiring managers.  

Have your own questions ready for the interviewer 

Hiring managers value knowing that a candidate is ready, willing, and able to contribute value to their teams. You can demonstrate this during your virtual interview by coming up with thoughtful questions that you can ask at the end of your interview. Here are some examples to get your thought process going. Asking questions will show you’re thinking about the long-term impact of the role, your desire to fit well within the team, and how you’ll contribute to the organization’s success. Make sure your questions are appropriate, meaning, you don’t want to bring up salary or benefits on your very first interview.
