The Hidden Job Market: How to Land Jobs That Aren’t Posted Online
Jason Groupp | Career Tips, Opinion | February 17, 2025

Did you know that up to 80% of job openings are never publicly advertised? Many roles are filled through networking, internal promotions, or direct referrals – long before they reach job boards (if at all).
If you’re relying solely on using online applications in your job search, you could be missing out on a significant portion of available job opportunities.
I’ve experienced this firsthand, with 100% of the roles I’ve held having materialized through networking. There were times when I saw a job posting but used my connections to get an ‘in’ instead of responding to the posting. Other times, there wasn’t even a formal job opening, but after conversations with key people at a company, a role was created specifically for me.
The key takeaway? Job searching isn’t just about applying for open roles – it’s about building relationships and creating new job opportunities through those relationships. I’d like to share the proven ways you can make this happen.
5 ways to tap into the hidden job market and open doors for your career
1. Build genuine relationships and ask for conversations.
Talent recruiters and hiring managers are more likely to consider candidates with whom they are familiar or already know. Here’s how you can get on their radar:
- Engage on LinkedIn: Follow industry leaders, comment on their posts, and share insights. Engagement levels on LinkedIn are low compared to other social media networks, so thoughtful comments stand out.
- Attend networking events: Webinars, industry conferences, and local meetups can connect you with influential professionals and decision makers. This gives you an ‘in’ – so get out there!
- Reconnect with former colleagues: Former coworkers may know of unposted job openings. Reach out to them but be respectful of their time. After a conversation, follow up with a thank-you note, or better yet, send them a small gift, like a coffee from their favorite café.
2. Get strategic on LinkedIn.
A strong LinkedIn presence can open doors to hidden opportunities. Here’s how to use LinkedIn for job searches with tips to expand your network and job opportunities:
- Optimize your profile page: In your About and Experience sections, use relevant keywords that match your target job. Keywords are critical for recruiters and hiring managers searching for candidates. For example, I’m currently hiring for a role requiring fluency in French. Just seeing “French” in candidate profiles on LinkedIn brings those job seekers to the top of my search.
- Set your status to ‘Open to Work’: Recruiters and hiring managers actively search for candidates using this LinkedIn feature.
- Engage with company content: Liking, commenting, and sharing posts from companies you’re interested in gets and keeps you on their radar.
- Join groups that align with your job search and industry: LinkedIn groups provide a place for professionals in the same industry or with similar interests to share their insights and experiences, ask for guidance, and build valuable connections.
3. Leverage employee referrals.
Many companies have employee referral programs that reward their people for recommending candidates to superiors, hiring managers, or human resources departments. Here’s how to take advantage of these programs:
- Identify employees at your target companies and connect with them.
- Build some rapport with a company contact before asking them to refer you to their employer. It should feel natural, not transactional, for you and your contact.
- Request informational interviews with hiring managers to learn about their company culture and existing or upcoming job opportunities.
4. Work with a professional talent recruiter.
Recruiters often have access to exclusive roles that aren’t publicly listed. Here’s how to maximize this resource:
- Build a relationship with a reputable, industry-specific recruiter.
- Check out a recruiting agency’s job board to see if relevant roles are available – but keep in mind that new job opportunities are added daily, and again, not all job openings are publicized!
- When contacting a recruiter or recruiting firm, reference a specific job posting to show you’ve done your homework.
5. Make direct outreach a habit.
Sometimes, reaching out directly to hiring managers can set you apart. Try this approach:
- Find the hiring manager’s phone number or email or connect on LinkedIn through messaging.
- Send a personalized message highlighting your skills and interest in their company.
- Attach your resume and express interest in current or future openings that match your expertise.
Fast track your job search and find those hidden opportunities
The best jobs often go to those who network – not just those who apply. By proactively building relationships and staying engaged, you’ll access opportunities before they’re even publicized.
I highly recommend partnering with a recruiter to accelerate your job search. You’ll gain access to available jobs and exclusive opportunities that specifically align with your experience, skills, and career aspirations. Plus, you’ll gain an advocate and career coach who genuinely wants you to succeed!
